Lega (also Warega or Rega), Dem. Rep. of Congo: a spoon made of ivory, the entire handle fashioned as a standing figure. All carved from a single piece.

Lega (also Warega or Rega), Dem. Rep. of Congo: a spoon made of ivory, the entire handle fashioned as a standing figure. All carved from a single piece. - Mimoevropské a domorodé umění

A Lega ivory spoon, from eastern Congo. The handle of the spoon is a standing, female figure. All is carved from a single piece (see also cat. no. 116). The woman displays the typical Lega style, with elongated oval head, heart-shaped, concave face, raised coffee bean eyes, and small mouth. The arms lie close to the body, the hands are somewhat splayed out. On the forehead, on the abdomen and along her back line the woman displays decorative scars in the form of small dot and circle motifs. A stylistically perfect piece, with a few age-related, fine cracks and a convincing, honey-coloured, light-dark, patchy patina (ivory naturally darkens with time). All edges are round and ‘softly’ worn. An object in the best condition, with no significant damage. There is a collection inventory number, in white letters, on the inner side of the left leg of the female figure.
Length: 17 cm; width: 5 cm.
Between c. 1900 and the first third of the 20th century. (ME) ASA
