Provenance: private collection, Paris. A comparable composition by Van de Venne was sold at Sotheby’s, London, on 26 Oct. 1994 as lot 63. Walter Bernt points out about Van de Venne’s painting style: "The numerous grotesque pictures in grey or brownish tones (grisailles) date from A. P. van de Venne’s late period: groups of beggars and vagabonds, peasants and quarrelling women, chivalrous gentlemen and their ladies, illustrations of Dutch proverbs, personifications of poverty, and the world’s misery…"
