Firmin Baes was the son of Henri Baes and Héloise Boly. He was trained by his father, who was a decorative painter. While working with his father around 1880, he met the painter Léon Frédéric, who became his teacher. From 1888-1894, Baes studied at the Académie royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. The artist was closely associated with the group of artists around the magazine Pour l'Art. In 1900 he participated in the Paris World exhibition and was awarded the bronze medal for his painting “The archers”. Around 1900 he developed a pastel technique on canvas, which contributed significantly to his fame.
