A carpet, designed by Hans Steineder,
Austria, c. 1930, slit tapestry technique, wool on cotton, 195 x 130 cm. (DRAX)
Although no carpet designs by the Austrian architect Hans Steineder (1904–1976) are known in literature, this work is closely related to his early buildings and interiors in terms of style.
The small horizontal stripes repeated in a rhythmic pattern recall the flat rectangular ornaments Steineder preferably used in combinations of three or four for his façades and interior designs, such as for the Villa Stocker or the mosaic flooring at the school at Attnang/Puchheim.
Lit.: cf. Viel zu modern. Hans Steineder, Architekt, exhibition catalogue, AZW, Vienna 1999, p. 1, p. 14, p. 65 – F. Achleitner, Österreichische Architektur des 20. Jahrhunderts, vol. 1, p. 168, p. 171 – Architekturzentrum Wien (AZW), Vienna, estate of Hans Steineder
