Lot No. 162

Circle of Raffaello Sanzio, called Raphael

[Saleroom Notice]
Circle of Raffaello Sanzio, called Raphael - Old Master Paintings

(Urbino 1483–1520 Rome)
Madonna and Child with the Infant Saint John the Baptist,
oil on canvas, laid down on panel, 93 x 74.5 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private collection, Rome

The composition of the present painting derives from the celebrated Raphael prototype, the so-called Madonna of the Rose, painted in 1517, now in the Museo del Prado, Madrid, which is set indoors and with the figure of Saint Joseph on the left.

This subject was returned to several times by Raphael’s workshop and by artists in his circle. Giulio Romano, who inherited Raphael’s workshop after the master’s death, executed a painting inspired by the Madonna of the Rose: it was the so-called Madonna di Novar, now in the National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh.

The present painting differs from the prototype in the depiction of the hilly landscape on the left background and in the addition of the naturalistic detail of the basket visible on the lower right.
