Lot No. 1

Egon Schiele

(Tulln 1890-1918 Vienna)
"Kauernde", 1914, drypoint etching on wove paper ('Massimilianicobütten'), from the edition of 100 impressions on this paper, plate size 47.8 x 31.5 cm, sheet size 66.3 x 48 cm, printed after the steel-facing of the plate and published by Avalun-Verlag/Vienna in 1919, Kallir 6 b, carefully closed tears to the sheet edges, attached to the mount at the four corners, framed, (EW)

The edition of this graphic work was published by Avalun in 1919. The plan was to print 50 copies on Japan paper, 50 copies on 'French laid paper' and 100 copies on 'Massimilianico laid paper'. Only a very small part of this edition was sold. These examples were stamped with 'Egon Schiele 1914' and numbered. By far the greater part of the unsold sheets remained unstamped and unnumbered. 80 unsold copies were included in the portfolio 'Das Graphische Werk von Egon Schiele' published by Rikola-Verlag in 1922. Most of these impressions have the stamped signature on the reverse. All the copies that remained unsold even as a portfolio were subsequently sold individually and, like the present sheet, in most cases bear no signature stamp.
