The central focus was Francisco Goya’s portrait sketch of the ten-year-old Infanta María Isabel, a preparatory study for Goya’s celebrated Portrait of the Family of Carlos IV in the Prado. With a realised price of €712,000, the bids far exceeded expectations.

Bidding for a painting of The Madonna and Child with the Infant Saint John the Baptist, by an artist from the immediate circle of Sandro Botticelli went on for several minutes before finally ending, to a burst of applause in the room, at a sensational €663,875.

Works by some of the outstanding female artists of their time were once again particularly popular: The Fruit Seller by the remarkable 17th century Parisian artist, Louyse Moillion, who became famous for her still life paintings, sold for €260,000. Works by her contemporaries, Sofonisba Anguissola and Barbara Longhi, also reached peak prices.
