Lot No. 164

Ferrarese School, 16th century

Ferrarese School, 16th century - Old Master Paintings

The Ring of Gyges, oil on panel, 89 x 89 cm, framed

The present painting is closely related to compositions by Francesco da Santacroce, such as The Madonna and Child Flanked by Saints Peter and Paul (Milan, Coll. Ospedale Maggiore). One day, Gyges, a poor shepherd in the service of the king of Lydia, discovered a hollow bronze horse in a crevice that had formed after an earthquake. Inside the horse he found the dead body of a soldier whose ring he pulled off the latter’s finger. Back at the king’s court, he found out that the ring could make him invisible. He seduced the queen, killed the king, and rose to power.

We are grateful to Emilio Negro for suggesting an attribution to Francesco Rizzi da Santacroce (active in Veneto and Lombardy during the 1st half of the 16th century).
