Lot No. 418

Günther Uecker *

Günther Uecker * - Contemporary Art II

(born in Wendorf in 1930)
Nagelkreuz dunkel, 2017, signed Uecker, bronze dark patinated, no. 13 from the edition of 35 examples, 45 x 41 x 14 cm, cast Schmäke Düsseldorf (stamp)

Provenance:
Private collection, Düsseldorf

Uecker’s treatment of the topic of pain in his work is exemplarily expressed by the use of the cross to represent human injury. Günther Uecker was inspired to make this piece by the reformer Martin Luther, who nailed his theses to the Castle Church of Wittenberg in 1517. It was created in 2017 on the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther’s posting of the theses. A dark patinated bronze cross forms the body of the sculpture.
The Cross of Nails appeared in both a light and a dark version. Both versions have a unique, individual patina that differs minimally from sculpture to sculpture and gives each copy of the edition a distinctive character. The bronze replicates a wooden cross wrapped in cloth and studded with numerous nails. Uecker not only imitates the grain of the wood in detail, but also the materiality of the cloth and the nails hammered into the cross. The detailed and authentic surface design gives the bronze its special character.
