Indonesia, Bali: an ornate dagger, called kris, with wavy blade, rubies and sapphires on the ring between the blade and hilt (!) as well as with rich silver decorations on the hilt and sheath. - Tribal Art - Africa

An ornate kris from Bali. Blackened, wavy (in 7 waves), pamor blade. The hilt is carved from hard wood in the typical Balinese form, and coloured black. The dagger is decorated with small bits of chased and engraved, very high-quality silver. Blossom rhomboids and triangles with leaf and blossom tendrils embellish the sides, with a star-shaped blossom on top. The silver ‘Mendak’ ring between the blade and hilt is covered in alternating four red rubies and four blue-gray sapphires! These set and polished precious stones partly display a ‘star effect’ (asterism). The sheath displays a boat ('Wranka') made in the rounded Bali style of precious dark and black wood. The lower, long part of the sheath (‘Pendok’) is thoroughly cloaked in silver of the best quality and on both sides richly chased and engraved with blossom and leaf tendrils and decorative bands. An elaborately crafted, beautiful object from Bali, with signs of usage and minor damage to the hilt (slight cracks, a minor loss). Otherwise no damage. Length: 64 cm (in total). (ME)
