Painter of modern art | Deutschland 1904–1981 Rutarhof, Carinthia, Austria Werner Berg was an Austrian-German painter and one of the most important Austrian artists of the 20th century.

Born in 1904 in Elberfeld (Wuppertal, Germany), Berg settled with his family in the rural farmhouse, the ‘Rutarhof’, in the region of Carinthia in 1931. Here in this farmhouse, not far from the Slovenian border, he set out to discover an existence “close to things”. Deploying a subtle touch, he managed to distil the reality of his everyday life into urgent symbols. The motifs encountered in Berg’s art are taken straight from a life shaped by the humdrum existence of farming communities. Berg’s most important subjects are landscapes and portraits. The ‘Werner Berg Gallery’ (now the Werner Berg Museum) opened in 1968 in Bleiburg, and has since become a pilgrimage site for art enthusiasts from all over Europe. Rooted in the artistic perception of German Expressionism, Werner Berg’s paintings yield deep insight into the soul of the landscapes of Lower Carinthia and its inhabitants.

Berg received the State of Carinthia Culture Award in 1973 in recognition of his deep artistic exploration of his chosen home. Berg was awarded the Austrian Decoration for Science and Art in the summer of 1981. The final years of his life were immensely artistically productive. Berg was found dead in his Rutarhof studio in September of the same year. He left behind a fascinating and unique oeuvre, which is on permanent exhibition at the Werner Berg Museum in Bleiburg.
